According to reports the SS-216 Grunion submarine attacked the Kano Maru on July 31, 1942 by firing six to seven torpedoes at the ship. All but one bounced off the ship without missing or exploding. Even though one of the torpedoes knocked out the ship’s engines and communications, it fired back from it’s deck gun and sunk the Grunion.
